SAN LUIS OBISPO

“The light was different here in California.” ― Heidi Freestone, Growing Home

Good Evening!

A WISE LADY
Compare to a lot of people, traveling has never been a priority in my life, If I have to make an inventory of all the trips I've made, I can easily count them with the fingers on my hands. However, I can attest that the entire San Luis Obispo County, is one if not the most elegant and dignify places I had ever visited. Almost everywhere I turned, it seemed, the breathtaking views were like watching a wise lady that knows better not to lose composure or else.

I have to tell you, as a visitor, I only ventured to the destinations available to tourists: The beautiful beaches, Hearst Castle, and the Spanish-style towns all around are landmarks hard to miss. The Pacific ocean seems even more pacific in this coastal area, as if sending a direct message of approval to the inland nature that surrenders the County.

The agreeable weather, the wine tasting, even the salty smell of the ocean, directed my attention to the surreal beauty of the place. Indeed, everywhere I looked, the view in front of me was comparable to an intentional, colorful postcard, ready to be send. Walking tours are, probably, the best choices if one is most interested in learning historical details of the place, and so I did embarque in a series of them, learning a great deal while having fun at the same time.

DIRTY SECRETS
On my last trip to San Luis Obispo, which I believe happened in the year of 2022, I learned a dark side of the city by doing a walking tour in Downtown called: "Ghost and True Crime in San Luis Obispo". The tour was fully packed with history and myths, as well as intriguing details of the locals through out its history. Their obscure, dirty secrets were revealed, as it was expected, in a veru casual way. So dark and disturbing, that it forced me to asked more than once: "Who in the world were these people?"

Nonetheless, I've learned that, if I want to enjoy California, I am not going to dwell in its faults. No place on the face of the earth has been free of formal disapproval one time or another, for one reason or the other. SLO it's not the exception. However, things have changed, and in the present, the County is safer if I compare it to other cities in the State or any other place on earth.

NOSTALGIC FREEDOM
I wanted to write a piece of music similar to San Luis Obispo County, that is, free of conflict, easy to absorb, but stimulating at the same time. Hoping to secure a similar feeling that I had when I first visited Hearts Castle, which is located in San Simeon (it has been at least 10 years since that time), but I do remember well, as if it was yesterday, and I wanted to capture the nostalgic freedom that I noticed while I explored the area, a feeling that reoccurs over and over everytime I think about that trip.

The beauty of San Luis Obispo County is remarkable, and I dare say, it is a land unlike any other place on earth: If I try writing about the combination of the different attributes that exist there, I will not be making it justice. That is why, I have composed a piece of music trying to capture the moment  that_ Whether is about Cambria, Grover Beach, San Simeon or any other city in the County_ I only dream, it would help you visualize the delicacy that SLO County holds.

PRIDE AND JOY
Despite this injustice, It is my desire that, with this cello-piano piece, you are able to be transported to one of the landscpaes in SLO and feel, even if it is in a small quantity, the pride and joy I had the fortune to experienced in my visits to this wonderful place.
